It’s that time of year, San Diego Comic-Con 2010 is well underway. Used to be that only hardcore geeks made it out to this convention, but now a who’s who of the entertainment world being present brings out not just the hardcore geeks but also regular folks who just happen to have their favorite TV shows and movies. This afternoon the cast of The Big Bang Theory will be present, including Johnny Galecki, Emmy-nominated Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar. That panel will be moderated by Wil Wheaton. Firefly creator Joss Whedon gets his own panel every year called The Joss Whedon Experience. I guess he’s created enough shows – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse, that he must have plenty to talk about and definitely enough fans to fill Ballroom 20.
Hall H will be busy from 4:00-6:00pm with Sony Pictures rolling out stars from several of its upcoming releases. Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes will be there to talk about the upcoming comedy The Good Guys. Seth Rogen and Christoph Waltz will be there for an The Green Hornet panel, and Paul Bettany, Karl Urban and Maggie Q will be on hand to promote Priest.
After that Hall H will be handed over to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, where the cast, including star Michael Cera and Anna Kendrick are expected to appear.
Tomorrow one of my favorite shows, Chuck has its screening and Q&A in Ballroom 20. Stars Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Ryan McPartlin, Joshua Gomez and Adam Baldwin (as well as pretty much the entire cast) will be there to discuss the upcoming fourth season. The cast of sci-fi thriller Fringe will also be in Ballroom 20 later, with stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble, as well as other cast members, participating in a Q&A after the screening.
Later in tomorrow in Hall H, Universal presents it’s two latest sci-fi releases. Paul stars Shaun of the Dead stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as well as Sigourney Weaver and Seth Rogen. It’s about two sci-fi geeks that go to Comic-Con but end up at Area 51 where they meet an alien that takes them on a road trip. Sounds ridiculous, yet with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, I’m counting on it being a gem. After the Paul presentation is the Cowboys & Aliens Q&A with director Jon Favreau. His movie is about a town in the Old West that gets a visit from aliens, causing the town folk, Indians and outlaws to have to work together to defeat the intruders. Favreau is no stranger to Comic-Con – he’s presented his films Zathura, Iron Man and Iron Man 2 in past years.
Another favorite from TV, Human Target has a small panel going in Room 6BCF tomorrow. So now that FOX is moving this awesome action show to Friday nights, the FOX graveyard, who knows what small time it has left. Stars Mark Valley(♥), Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley join producer Matthew Miller for a Q&A after a special screening.
Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters even has a panel. Everyone on the show – Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage, Tory Belleci, Grant Imahara and Kari Byron will be in attendance for the Q&A.
On Sunday, ABC’s awesome detective show, Castle, has its panel from 10:30 to 11:30am. Stars Nathan Fillion (who will be on hand earlier with James Gunn’s latest movie as well), Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones and Molly Quinn will all be there for the Q&A and video presentation.
And, from 11:15-12:15 my favorite show over the past five years, Supernatural, has its screening and Q&A in Ballroom 20. New showrunner Sera Gamble, producer Ben Edlund and show creator and producer Eric Kripke will all be there. The official Comic-Con website just says “castmembers’ but Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Jim Beaver are expected to be there as well.
So, as you can see….some interesting things happen at Comic-Con these days. Don’t get me wrong there is still geeky stuff – like a panel on how to create a great costume, a Ball-jointed Dolls Collectors Group(WTF?), and a Twilight Fanfiction Author Fangroup where some fanfiction writers hold a Q&A. Alright then. But still, plenty of things for regular folks who have their favorite TV shows and movies.
