Pitt, Hill Premiere ‘Moneyball’ in Oakland

Yesterday, September 19, actors Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill joined their co-stars, Chris Pratt and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and athletes for the premiere of Moneyball at The Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California. You know who’s cooler than Brad Pitt? And, I mean way cooler? Captain Sully Sullenberger. Yep. And, the Captain, who brought an airliner down safely in the Hudson River a couple of years ago, was on-hand for the premiere since he lives in the Oakland suburbs.

In Moneyball, Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, the real-life General Manager of the Oakland A’s Major League Baseball team that turned to number-crunching with a system called sabermetrics in an effort to be cost-effective – while still getting reliable players on the field. When his team’s owner died, the new owners decided they weren’t throwing money away on good players, cutting the money Beane had to work with to recruit players to his team. So, he hired Peter Brand, played by Jonah Hill, who was a brainy, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist. And, the two looked to building a reliable team with players that were considered too old, too weird, or too injured by other teams, but were still skilled on the field. Their success with the Oakland A’s changed the way the game is played, and took Beane to a new level of understanding – in life, not just in baseball.

Moneyball was written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, based on the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. Bennett Miller directed Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman – who plays A’s manager Art Howe, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt (aka Mr. Anna Faris) – who plays baseball player Scott Hatteberg, in the movie.

So far Moneyball has garnered a 91% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, though that is with only 22 reviews counted.

Moneyball is scheduled to hit theaters in the States this Friday, September 23. Here are photos from the premiere featuring Brad Pitt, skinny Jonah Hill, Chris Pratt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kerris Dorsey, and Sully Sullenberger – along with baseballers, Scott Hatteberg and Hideki Matsui.
