Zooey Deschanel Charms on ‘New Girl’- 9.27.11

Last week, I told you I would be checking out FOX’s new series, New Girl. Cutie Zooey Deschanel has been terrific in the few flicks I’ve seen her in, including a wonderful turn in (500) Days of Summer, so I figured I’d check out her new show. Glad I did, it was an entertaining half-hour. I’m not sure the show would be all that fabulous with anyone else in the lead, but Deschanel’s quirky but adorable presence in the series makes it more than watchable. She’s utterly charming, even when breaking into silly song-sentences. The rest of the cast is fine, with only Jake Johnson’s Nick standing out as a meaningful character so far. That fellow has been dumped too, so he has a connection with his cute new roomie. The “douchebag jar” was a good gag in the pilot episode, with whichever of the male roomies having to put money in the jar every time something inappropriate or too schmoozy was said. It was a nice gag, let’s just hope it doesn’t get done to death.

In tonight’s New Girl, “Kryptonite,” the guys talk Jess into retrieving her belongings from her cheating ex-boyfriend’s house. Don’t worry, they tag along for moral support. Jess meets new roomie, Winston, who has just come back from playing basketball in another country. And, the newbie tries to get Schmidt to let him have his old room back.

In New Girl, Zooey Deschanel plays Jess, a strange bird of a girl that just moved into a flat with three guys. Last week, we learned that she found them from a listing on the internet. The guys that listed that ad, and are now Jess’s roomies, are Jake Johnson as Nick, a guy who was also dumped and also seems to have a sweet streak, Max Greenfield as Schmidt, who tries too hard to be cool around other people. And, this week Lamorne Morris joins the cast as new roomie, Winston. Hannah Simone also stars as Jess’s bestie, CeCe.

Guest-starring in tonight’s New Girl is Damon Wayans, Jr. as soon-to-be former roommate, Coach. Good grief, that man looks just like his Dad! Ian Wolterstorff also guest-stars as Jess’s former boyfriend, Spencer.
