‘The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo’ Stockholm Press Conference & Photocall

Even though I don’t understand why they are remaking a perfectly good movie, I’m still curious about the English-language version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. What is really strange is that they have kept the setting in Sweden, and kept the Swedish names. They just will be speaking English instead of Swedish. The original that starred Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace was fantastic. I personally don’t think a remake was warranted for a movie that was released in 2009. I guess they do that, as was done with Let the Right One In, because some Americans can’t be bothered to watch a movie with subtitles. Which is pretty pathetic, if I do say so myself as an American. It’s ridiculous laziness, which lets movie studios be lazy themselves by releasing a story that’s already been told. And, told fabulously.

In the remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Daniel Craig takes the role of Mikael Blomkvist, originally played by Michael Nyqvist, and Rooney Mara takes the role of Lisbeth Salander, which was originated by Noomi Rapace. Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, and Joely Richardson all take roles in the remake as well. David Fincher directed the English version, based on an adapted screenplay by Steven Zaillian.

In the film, based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling The Millennium Trilogy novel, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired by Henrik Vanger to find his niece that went missing 40 years ago. Though her body was never found, the old man feared she could have been murdered by a member of his dysfunctional family. During her security sweep, Lisbeth Salander snoops in on Blomkvist and subsequently starts helping him in his investigation. Working together, the writer and strange Lisbeth discover a link from the niece’s disappearance to some grotesque serial killings around 40 years ago – which unveils a dark secret for the Vanger family.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will hit theaters in the States on December 21, and in the UK on December 26.

Here are photos from the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo photocall and press conference, which was held in Stockholm, Sweden yesterday, November 21. Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgård, and director David Fincher were on-hand for the publicity events. Daniel Craig was not in attendance since he is currently filming the latest James Bond flick, SKYFALL.

  1. Shelly says:

Did you just watch the Swedish movie because you couldn’t be bothered to actually read the book? That would be pathetic, ridiculous laziness, etc. Had you actually read the book, you would realize how un-”fabulous” the Swedish adaptation was. Fincher is a genius and his film will EASILY surpass the TV Movie-esque job Oplev did.

  2. Nezi says:

I have stopped reading books before seeing the movie adaptions. Know why? Every person that ever reads a book before a movie thinks the movie version is bad. If I know a book is going to be a movie soon I’ll wait to see the movie first, because I’d rather go into the movie with an open mind. When you’ve already read the book you can’t see the movie with an open mind. You’re welcome to your opinion, and yes, Fincher is a terrific director. I liked the Swedish versions of the movies though, and you’re welcome to disagree.
