Actor Richard Armitage attended a shindig in La-La land this past weekend. The pre-Emmy® event, the BAFTA® LA TV Tea, was sponsored by BBC America and Audi and held at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills on Saturday, September 21. Talented British thespian, Armitage, is best known for his work as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as spy Lucas North in MI:5 (aka Spooks), and Special Forces hero John Porter in Strike Back. He was already in the Los Angeles area pre-Emmy® weekend while finishing up the last bit of filming on his latest movie, a tornado-themed flick whose title has not be finalized. So far it has been referred to as Black Sky and Into the Storm. I guess we'll find out what the official title is when it's released either later this year, or early next year.
Also in attendance at the BAFTA® LA TV Tea were other famous folks, many of whom went on to attend the Emmy® Awards on Sunday. Among them were Richard's former Robin Hood costar Lara Pulver and her partner Raza Jaffrey (another Spooks alum), Emmy® nominees Kerry Washington, Kevin Spacey, and Michael Douglas. Owain Yeoman from The Mentalist, Jason Isaacs from the Harry Potter series, another Spooks alum! David Oyelowo,
as well as Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery from Downton Abbey, were all also in attendance.
We'll next see Richard Armitage in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, where he will reprise his role as Dwarf King Thorin Oakenshield. The second film in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy will be in theaters on December 13, and will follow the further adventures of Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo Baggins, and Oakenshield's Company of Dwarves as they take on the great dragon Smaug and attempt to reclaim the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor. An Unexpected Journey was a terrific first part of the adventure, and I'm quite looking forward to the next installment. You can check out the movie page for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug HERE.
Here's hoping that the role of Thorin Oakenshield opens more doors for Richard, and that we'll get to see him in more high-quality projects in the future!
